The Venkatadri villa, set on a 2,174 sq. ft. plot in the densely populated area of Keelkattalai, Chennai, represents a thoughtful fusion of minimalism, functionality, and sustainable design. Developed as a second home for a joint family, the residence aims to balance modern aesthetics with practical living, creating a space that feels both open and private.
The client’s brief for “something special” led to the creation of a compact yet elegant home that caters to the family’s needs while offering an ideal retreat from the bustling city. The layout is divided into distinct zones that cater to privacy, semi-privacy, and recreation. The ground floor features a double-height living and dining area that connects seamlessly to a kitchen and a bedroom for the parents. On the first floor, three additional bedrooms are complemented by a small open-to-sky terrace, providing a quiet outdoor space for relaxation. The top floor is dedicated to a large terrace with recreational space, while also incorporating a sacred pooja room, which serves as a serene sanctuary for spiritual reflection.
Design elements are carefully curated to enhance natural light, ventilation, and thermal comfort. The use of a calming grey color palette for floors and exposed concrete ceilings, paired with white walls, creates an inviting, neutral backdrop. Aluminum louvers, white latticed walls, and glass balconies break the monotony of the exterior facade, while adding warmth and visual interest. The south-facing windows are designed with deep recesses to allow only the warm winter sunlight to filter inside, minimizing heat gain and enhancing the home’s energy efficiency.
